NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS
(ie. on the day)
Entry Cards:
Please check that your class number and your exhibitor’s number are on your entry card.
Make sure you put your name, class and, if wished, a description of the item entered, e.g. “home-made soft toy”, on the other side of the card.
If known, you can label your fruit, vegetable and flower entries, e.g. “3 cooking apples – Bramleys”. This enhances the interest of the viewing public.
Place your card upside down alongside your exhibit, so that your name cannot be seen by the judge.
Please make sure that the child’s date of birth & age is clearly marked in the children’s classes.
Some ‘Top Tips’ for showing:
Read the rules – if 5 onions are asked for, it’s no use displaying 4 or 6.
Don’t display fruit and vegetables which are under or overripe.
Apples should be displayed ‘stalk down’.
Don’t overcrowd your floral vases. The judges are looking for quality of flower; an attractive arrangement will endear you to the judge. Avoid using ‘Oasis’ type floral foam to hold stems in place, using alternatives if possible. No floral foam for class 52 & 53.
Vegetables: Try to pick everything on the morning of the show when cells are turgid and everything is fresh. The judge will open pods, and snap beans etc, and will be looking for crispness.
Look out for pests – gently shake flowers to dislodge flea beetles or place them near a white background to encourage them out. Greenfly infestations can be brushed off stems with a soft paintbrush.
Don’t be disheartened if you don’t win. At least you tried. Look round the hall, see where others were better … get tips for next year!
